Dear Freshers/Undergraduates
This is an open letter to all freshers in different tertiary institutions especially those very young ones who gained immediately after secondary school without having to wait at all.
My beautiful ladies and handsome guys, I know you are new in the university environment and you've been told different things before you came.
I know while you were in secondary school, you've heard that the university community is a FREE WORLD and you can behave the way you want because you have the FREEDOM to do whatever you like.
I know you've heard that the university is not like secondary school where you are punished for coming late, flogged for disobedience and beaten for not doing your assignment. You've been told that you do whatever you like and come to school whenever you want and the likes. You have swallowed this up and started acting exactly this way and you feel you've arrived and nobody is like you anymore, because you have your FREEDOM.
You start talking to people anyhow, you disrespect people including your lectures at the slightest opportunity you get because you were told that nobody can beat you, and your watchword remains "this is not secondary school, na university be this".
My dearest, please can I advise you. Yes they were right by telling you that the University is not secondary school and there is freedom but what they didn't tell you is that you pay for your expanse in freedom. The fact that you weren't beaten physically doesn't mean you wouldn't be beaten, but this time the beating might be more severe and the marks cannot be erased compared to the physical one you recieved during your secondary school days.
Imagine a young lady as a fresher in ND1 insulting her lecturer and walking out on him for no just cause all because of the "I don enter school" mentality. What do you think will become of her in the remaining years in school?
Dear freshers/undergraduate in as much as I congratulate you on your matriculation, please help me and behave well whole in school so that we can heartily congratulate you on your convocation with good results. Know that insulting people isn't a way of showing maturity, you will only end up hurting yourself. Also know that the level of Freedom you want to access in the university is dependent on what you are ready to give up because the main aim of being admitted is to study and not to show off.
